why did they give the nobel prize late to Watson and Franklin?

Why is there always such a delay for a scientific discovery for a nobel prize?
They discovered the DNA, but why did it take 10 years.

First, Nobel Prizes are given to living people. It was **not** given to Rosalind Franklin because of this rule. The discovery of the structure of DNA was given to Watson, Crick, and Wilkins.

Second, it takes time for the scientific community to duplicate the work of pioneers. Also it’s important that there is a historical perspective on the impact of the discovery. Then there is the process of nominating the individuals for the discovery. Nobels are given each year, so others on the list make have had priority (given their age, etc.) while Watson and Crick were still young.
